Holistic therapies are becoming increasingly acknowledged as effective aids to mental healthcare. The Wanderer’s Garden explores the relationship between music therapy and green therapy, proposing a purpose-built facility for restorative practices. Receptive and active techniques derived from music therapy and green therapy inform the design of a series of interactive spatial instruments scattered throughout a walled garden of native vegetation. Sited in the abandoned Tip Top Bread Factory in Newtown, walking distance from the CBD, Matairangi and existing healthcare, The Wanderer’s Garden provides a safe haven for healing, hidden from the chaos of everyday life.
